The development of the White House Hotel in Abersoch was finally approved by the Gwynedd Council planning committee.
On Monday afternoon, councilors approved the planning request for the construction of a new 42-room hotel and spa on the site of the dilapidated building, in accordance with recommendations outlined in the report.
The news comes 10 months after the application, submitted by Manchester-based developers Broomco, was turned down due to the lack of money the developer set aside for affordable housing.
Broomco developers wanted to demolish the old “horror” White House hotel to build a new site and 18 apartments.
The company had offered £ 150,000 for affordable off-site housing, but the cash supply was deemed insufficient by planners and the planning committee rejected the scheme in June last year.
This angered many villagers, Hywel Wyn Williams, Abersoch’s Plaid Cymru councilor, saying it was a “lost opportunity” for Abersoch.
An online petition was launched following the council’s decision and more than 1,000 people joined the “Reverse Planning Permission Denied on White House Hotel Abersoch†Facebook group.
Catherine Williams of Rhydyclafdu, who started the group, says the news is “fantastic†for the region.
“I am so happy that this has finally been approved,” she said.
“It will be a great place for the region and it will finally take that horror away from Abersoch.
“I’m really glad I took the time last July to launch the Facebook page.
“The support from the local community was just great, and although I started the petition, there was a lot of hard and expensive work behind the scenes and the owners really deserve credit for never giving up.
“It just shows that the power of people can really make a difference.”
The new site will create more than 100 jobs according to the developers, while the council itself believes it will bring in £ 1.5million to the local economy each year.
