The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on Sunday launched a five-day national training on the application of the FAO Pesticide Registration Toolkit as part of the Risk Reduction Project. to pesticides in Bangladesh.

The training workshop in a hotel in Dhaka aims to make participants aware of the structure and content of the toolkit, as well as how it can be used in the daily work of personnel responsible for the registration of pesticides.

The FAO Pesticide Registration Toolkit is a decision support system for pesticide registrars in resource-limited countries, a press release says.

The inaugural session of the training workshop was attended by the Director General of Agriculture Extension Department, Md Benojir Alam, as the chief guest, and the Deputy Representative (Programme) of FAO in Bangladesh, Nur Ahamed Khondaker , as a special guest.

FAO’s Chief Technical Coordinator in Bangladesh, Saso Martinov, kicked off the inaugural session with the welcome speech.

Harold van der Valk, FAO Headquarters international consultant on pesticide management and environmental specialist, and Milan Ivic, specialist in highly hazardous pesticides, will lead the five-day workshop.

Workshop participants include representatives from the pesticide registration authority, pesticide registration board, and experts from universities and research institutes.

“The Toolkit is seen as an online registration guide designed for pesticide registrars to use on a daily basis. The toolkit can help pesticide registration staff with various routine tasks, such as locating data requirements, evaluating technical aspects of the registration dossier, reviewing risk mitigation and seeking advice on decision-making,” the statement said.

“The toolkit also includes links to a variety of sources of pesticide-specific information, such as international registrations, scientific journals, hazard classifications, etc.,” it reads.

The International Code of Conduct on Pesticide Management developed by FAO and the World Health Organization describes all stages of pesticide development – including manufacture, formulation, registration, packaging, distribution, the storage, transport, use and final disposal of a pesticide product and its containers.

The FAO Pesticide Risk Reduction Project in Bangladesh, funded by the GEF, aims to strengthen national capacities for better management of pesticides and hazardous wastes with a strong focus on preventing the recurrence of similar situations to the future.
